U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday on the second leg of his first overseas trip since entering office and said he had new reasons to hope for peace and stability to the Middle East after his visit to Saudi Arabia.
Afterwards, Trump went to the nearby Western Wall where he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Jewish holy site. The Western Wall is part of an ancient retaining wall erected around the Jewish Temple. The Temple Mount, site of the first and second Jewish Temples, is considered the holiest site in Judaism.
Because of the unregulated status of this place, the head of the White House went to the Old City without the leadership of Israel and Palestine.
Trump wore black kippahs, the skull caps worn by religious Jews and by others as a mark of respect, and placed a folded piece of paper in a slot in the Western Wall, where the Jews put their prayer notes. After that he put his right hand on the wall and stood there for a while with his eyes closed.
Meanwhile, Trump's wife and daughter – Melanya and Ivanka – visited the "female" part of the Wailing Wall.
In Jerusalem, the head of the White House met with the Prime Minister of the Jewish state Binyamin Netanyahu. During the talks, Trump has assured the country's leadership that they are not only friend, but also"allies" in the face of the Iranian regime's threat.
